how many yellows to make up shoal?

Hi guys,

I post this in the reef fishes forum, and it was suggested I come here with it :-)

I am looking to keep a shoal od yellow tangs in my new 240 - how many fish would be best? I have been busy beavering away, looking for info on yellow tangs - notably looking for info on keeping a group of yellow tangs. I had planned on getting 5. I'll be ordering small ones (small in my neck of the woods is 2-3" i.e. not tiny). Over the last month I have seen groups kept in sizes varying from 2 to 12 (well 50+ but thats not a realistic home aquarium). What really got my interest (and sparked this thread) was a guy keepnig 10 yellows in a 42" cube - you wold think it sounds crazy, but it actually looked great.

My tank is 8x2x2. Aquascaping will be "fish friendly" - that is to say not too cluttered. As I say, I was planning on getting 5, but is more better? Obviously you can reach a point of having too many, but is it a case of the more you have, the better the aggression is difused (obviously up to a point).

Anyone who has experience with similar sized tanks, I would appreciate your views.

THanks

Matt

I'm not sure yet - it will depend on the viability and number of fish in the shoal. Navarchus angel or Emperor angel is a cert. If I get all those yellows then other tangs would be out....... couple of dwarf angels, gobies, hawkfish maybe........

Stocking list will depend on the size of the shoal as I say.

Cheers,

Matt

I tend to agree with you - they do indeed look very cool ;-)

I suppose less can be more :-)

Did you get them altogether?

Cheers,
Matt
