How many?

I'm currently in the process of setting up a 4' x 2' X 2' tank and am planning on adding a vortech. My rockwork will be pretty minimal and there will be at least a 2" clearance between any rocks and the tank walls. Now for my question. Would one pump set on pulse mode be enough to create a wave? How would this unit compare to a Tunze wavebox in terms of creating a wave? Thanks in advance.

Hi Chris,

I'd recommend you start with one pump if your goal is to keep softies and LPS. If you want to keep SPS two pumps would be ideal. With two pumps on a 120gal we regular dial in a 1" wave. The most noticeable difference between our pumps and a wave box is the absence of the large box, other differences include the fact that with the VorTech you can either create a wave or use the pump for typical circulation patterns or in our random modes.

Thanks for getting back to me Tim. I plan on it eventually being a mixed reef. If i had one vortech in pulse mode, blowing from right to left, how would another wavemaker, blowing from back to front, affect the effectiveness of the wave?

Another pump would make the wave more choppy but you should still be able to create a wave. Personally, I think choppy is good.
