How much does it cost you to run your tank?

I'm afraid if I kept up with the cost it would scare me away. It is scary when setting up a new tank how much money goes out before water even goes in the tank.

I have no idea. The bill comes in. The money leaves the bank account. That’s about as far as I pay attention to it cause I really don’t want to know

There's lots of variability in the rates people pay. For instance I see @oz saying his peak price in California is near 50c/kw whereas mine here is 18c/kw at peak. I know in the grand scheme of my bill the aquarium is only a small factor. My electric water heater is absolutely number 1 guzzler followed by my dehumidifier. Yes central air and the oven use a lot of juice but both are intermittent use.

It's a good question though so maybe I'll do some math to try to figure it out.

Well, we are a family of 6, and our power bill this month is estimated to be at around $250. Now, considering that $50 of that is the aquarium, and we run the washer and dryer, dishwasher, and oven/stove almost daily, keep our air on 73/74, plus all 6 of us taking showers daily, it is surprising the aquarium is such a high percentage of of that bill. However, we are in a brand new home and all of our appliances are very energy efficient.

I figured it out many years ago and at that time it ran me about $960.00 a year for a 100 gallon tank. Most of that was electricity and I think I was using ASW then. I rarely test or dose and don't need to quarantine or medicate so I don't spend anything on that.

Much of my food is fresh or frozen clams (which I buy to eat myself anyway) and white worms which I raise for free. Some LFS food every day and that is expensive.

My fish live forever so I rarely have to replace them but I am not as good with corals so I do have to buy one of those occasionally. :p
