How much flow is good flow?

How do you tell if your SPS is getting good flow? GPH per the tank size rule of thumb is not always a good metric because the flow depends on the rock work, size of the corals, placement of the corals, etc. Do you look at the movement and extension of the polyps? How much movement is good movement?

I've always been the type to watch and learn. Watching the polyp extension and movement is the best indicator IMHO.

Too much flow will end up causing them to stay in and in extreme flow, blow away tissue over time.

Too little flow allows for the potential algae growth on the skin and less micro nutrients to be captured by the polyps.
