How much GPH ???

Pnoytoitz

Force is strong in me !!!
How much gph to be pushing through 220 g tank 72x30x24. Height of stand is 36" high. Your input is appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

do you mean through the overflow, sump and back up? if so, how many and what size bulkheads do you have? if you are referring to internal circulation with powerheads it depends on what you plan on keeping.

Awesome, that's the same size as my tank! I believe in low turnover to the display tank because it's quiet. I do ~75 gallons per hour. That should turn over "all" of the water a couple of times a day. I can formulate no logical argument requiring more. My return pump feeds 4 tanks and is soon to also feed a chiller. It is gated back on each of those returns and has HUGE head loss running around at least 6 90's getting into the house from the fish closet to feed the water change chamber and the display tank. I can still overflow the display tank if I open it up all of the way. Cool pump.

Interestingly, if I dose alk into a chamber in the garage, the alk changes in the display tank within a 2-3 hrs, but this also ensures slower changes in the display tank which is safer for everything. Think about it, right, I can overdose Alk accidentally into the skimmer tank in the garage and it not only needs to overflow into the sump, but then be pumped into the display tank -- safer.

Flow in the tank on the other hand, completely different story. I have a Tunze 6100 in a 30 gallon frag tank and I'm still suspicious I have dead spots and I'm thinking about adding a K4 strategically. I don't get people with 50 gallon tanks who want to trade a K4 for a K3 because it's too much flow. I had 2 K4's in the tank and it definitely was not enough.

I have eheim 1262 . i thinking it should enough for low turn over. Also also putting gate valve on drain . How it works for you Ron?
Am planning to use 3 to 4 mp40w es vortech.

I would not put the gate valve on the drain, but on the return line.

Use really good gate valves or make sure it is over the sump...........they are known to leak. I love gate valves for there precison adjustment but I have had several leak over time.

I believe in low flow as well but for my taste 75gph through a 220g is a lil too low. My tank is about 200g, my return pump is a Quiet one 4000 that pushes about 300-400gph after head loss and going through the chiller. I also have 2x1.5" drains but one of them feeds my reactors and skimmer and the main drain is closed off 1/4 of the way. Noise is not an issue for me.

Sounds like enough to supply 2-3 tanks to me, too. I tried the gated drain once and had a hard time getting it to work right. My only noise now is the water in the drain plumbing splashing.

Hey Ferdie

It sounds like you have the herbie drain right. Two drains, the shorter one restricted and submerged, the taller one a little above the water line.

I'm with Mark on the tank-sump flow rate, 500-1K GPH is fine. I use a 1262 on my 300g. If you have chaeto or rubble in your sump, like I do, you may want to add a power head down there to keep it from fouling. I run the exhaust from my skimmer to the other side of the sump so the water flows across the rubble bed before it re-enter's the skimmer or exits the sump.

If you have an external skimmer that draws from your sump than your flow rate through you sump should be at least as high as the manuf recommended flow rate through the skimmer. If the flow rate through the sump is significatnly lower than the flow rate through the skimmer than you'll have very clean sump water and not so clean tank water. In theory this relationship is true for in-sump skimmers too but most don't publish their water flow rates. Its usually about 2/3 the skimmer pump's water flow rate.

I agree with Mark and Brian

I run around 800 to 900 GPH on my 110 gallon I haven't had a problem in a year so far
I use to do 3 to 5 time's the tank volume but had cyno growing in my sump only cranked up the flow rate no more cyno I can't guarantee that's why it's gone but that's all I did different
