Just wondering how much light is needed for a 30G sump that will house chaeto and LR the fuge area will only be 10'' - 15'' in long

goto Lowes, wal-mart or homedepot. get the $8.99 clip-on fixture with the halo, and get a growlight for plants. they range from 65 watt to 175 watt.
JDM...:smokin:.....:p

I've been using the 26w compact flourescent bulbs that are getting to be oh so popular these days. At least a couple companies (GE and someone else) sell them in the 6500K spectrum. I usually can't find those particular ones at Walmart, but you should have no problem finding them at just about any hardware store. They're more expensive than normal bulbs, but you'll make up the cost in longer life and less power usage.

there are many opinions on this, but if you intend to grow macroalgae to export nutrients and harbor microfauna, you want the lighting to be as strong as possible to encourage dense growth and simulate a shallow tidepool type environment. like reefnetworth suggested, a lower temp lighting scheme like plant growlights is good.
