How much of a CUC is necessary?

My CUC has dwindled and it's about time to recharge it. Trying to decide what to use as a replacement.

$171 - Reefcleaners.org kit comes with 205 dwarf ceriths, 50 Nassarius, 54 Florida Ceriths, 48 nerites, and 43 assorted hermit crabs. That seems like overkill to me.

LiveAquaria's kit for my size tank would run me in the $500 range...um, no thanks.

Same for BlueZoo Aquatics. $500.

Just trying to get ahead of whatever is making my tank dirty.

What do you guys prefer and how many?

I feel like a clean up crew that large will cause some of them to starve. That just adds to the problem you are trying to combat with a clean up crew which is excess nutrients that algae uses to grow... I would just get a smaller $20-30 package from an LFS and build from that if you need more.

If you have an algae problem a CuC will not fix that. They poop also. I have a few snails, crabs and other critters in the tank because I like to see different life forms. Yes some of them have a purpose but you can't fix a nutrient issue with a CUC. What are you trying to fix?
