How much of a cycle....

gem

Totally over it
will I likely get in my new tank, if I used the rock from my existing set up along with some dry rock, and all new dead sand?

Just curious....I have that new empty tank impatient thing goin' on. I guess I just need some words of wisdom to talk me down. LOL

if you have the opportunity, use tank water and a few pieces of existing live rock to speed up the curing process of the dead rock. give it like 2 weeks and it should be ready to go.

is the sand "used" from someone's tank? if so... rinse it really really well. you'll get a mini cycle from it.

when you do add all of this to your tank.. i'd recommend running some extra carbon for the first week.

Sam.....80 lbs of the rock is from my own previous reef tank...straight over. The sand......half is very well rinsed and dried from my previous tank. Water was clear when I was done rinsing. Someone else gave me sand from a crashed system but I decided not to use it as even after hours of rinsing it was still very murky and smelled like sulpher. So I bought some more dry sand at YR yesterday.
Thanks.

Sam do you think she should test her water after 2 weeks ?
Nitrate/NItrite and ammonia
Then do a 20% water change.
Thats what Ive done when seeding a new tank but then I use water from another tanks water change..

it's all about that test kit. test, test, test - watch the spikes and have confidence the cycle is complete. late now, but i would have recommended doing a water change on your existing tank and dumping that into the new.

I actually need a little more water in the 110...and am doing water changes on the other three tanks today....so that's 15 gal I can dump into the 110.

I switched over my old tank to my new tank in the same day Ginger. Use as much water as you can, but look at it as a large water change. Things will take a while to settle in, but you should be fine.

Hmmmm Well...hey if it worked for Mark Poletti......:D
I sort of figured that Mark.

Maybe I'll do extra large water changes on the other tanks using the water from the 110 and dump the change water in the 110.

I uswed 60 - 80 gallons of water from Brian P.'s tank, and about a square foot of his sand bed, pretty much undisturbed (two 8-10" square containers directly removed from his tank and set into my sump). I also used about 30 lbs. of rock from his 'fuges in his tank. I had -zero- cycle time. I measuered every day for three weeks (adding a little food daily for the week befor I put in the chromies), and ZERO ammonia. It now had a RBTA, a cup coral, a softy and a plate coral all doing well, along with some chromies, a sail-fin tang and a pigmy (cherub) angel. All are doing well.

nah, i didn't do the test. ginger can tho. if she places enough cured liverock with the uncured rock, it should cure really quickly. if you just put just tank water it won't cure as fast. all the worms, pods and who knows what else is in that rock transfer over to the uncured rock and begin eating away at the dead stuff. thats why its a fast cure.

within a week of putting the dead rock with the cured rock, i saw tons of those starfish legs sticking out of crevices on the dead rock.

If you are using cured rock and clean DRY rock I wouldn't think that would cause a cycle. And dry sand shouldn't cause a cycle. Am I missing something?

Nope....that's what I used. I ended up not using the sand I got from you....so It was all dry sand and rock from my existing tank plus the dry rock.
Livestock is in the tank and doing well.
