How much room between levels

When thinking bout planning your fish tank growout rack. Whats a good distance to think about between shelves? You need to include:

- Light
- Plumbing/Air
- Enough room to get close to the bottom
- enough room to get a net or something in to catch your youngsters.

I'd like to have a 3 shelf unit and was thinking of using 30 or 40 breeders in rows of 4 tanks. Suggestions?

I don't like shelves. I need elbow room. I don't like hitting the shelf above when I am trying to clean (daily chore). My broodstock system is like this, and I don't like it. All my baby fish tanks are on one level. Sump below. Much easier.

I agree with Kathy on this one, You could probably get away with stacking broodstock, but growout, too much labour involved to be playing Twister(c)

Also by the time you got to a third row, you'd be workin off a step stool or something foolish like that. That gets old in a hurry.

Use your space to suit your needs best. Do what works for you. Twice the ammount of tank space may be worth a little extra effort as far as doing your maint.;)

I´m still confused... I was thinking on going for 30 cm (~12in) from the top of the tanks to the level above. That way I could fit three racks as I haven´t much horizontal space to go but am still thinking if it´s worth as Dman pointed.

Maybe I´ll give it a go in small scale and see if it works.

MT,

I have in my racks system enough space to work with a 1,5 liter plastic pot (the transparent ones where you measure ingredient's ) - in fact I always take minimum 20 cm working space. I arree with Kathy and Dman space makes it easier, but hey got to male some compromise.
