How much royal blue?

I am planning out my build. I like the pop that RB LED produces but I want the main source of growth to come from 2 250w Radiums running in super lumens mode on an electronic balast which will have them at 300w a piece. How may watts of royal blue LED will I need such that they create a noticeable pop when the Radiums are on?

Play with any cheap 2 channel led fixture. If you run the white up to full intensity (simulating your MH lamps) and then start adding in blue slowly, you'll notice there is VERY little difference in the look of the tank until you've added a LOT of blue. Even at 100% blue the overall light has only gone from white to a bit cooler white.

It also matters a lot as to the kelvin rating of the MH you are pushing to 300w. A warmer (6500K) MH will be affected more with the RB leds than a cooler (20,000K) MH will.

But either way, I don't think you'll see much 'pop' even with 1.21 Gigawatts of RB leds as the fluorescents of the coral due to the RB leds will be so washed out by the white of the MH.

Thanks Ron. That's what I was afraid of. I guess I should perhaps just look to run the halides for 6-7 hours for growth and then put up some leds for viewing outside of that window.

I run a 14k Phoenix with LED's. There is a noticeable difference with 4 Luxeon M Royal blues, these are 12W each. Unfortunately these are hard to find now, Steves sells a 3up with the 3w version, or 9w each. I'd think 6 of those 3 ups per halide would get you close to what you are after.

You'll already get a ton of fluorescence from your Radiums. Royal blue LEDs won't change that too much. Just get some to run when your halides aren't on to really enjoy that look. Radiums are so perfect on their own they don't really need any fixing
