How much sand base for a refugium

I will be using a 40 breeder for a stand alone refuge. How deep should my sand bed be? I will only be doing about a 5x water turnover, if that makes any difference. Will aragonite be okay or should I use "mud"

I would use 5 to 7".

Sugar sized aragonite should work just fine, but I personally use mud in my 'fuge.

Please explain. Are you talking about the "Miracle Mud"? Is there another source?

I use about 2" of Kent's Biosediment with about 2" of Miracle Mud on top of that, then an inch of Walt Smith's Refugium Booster on top.

given your size tank I would use a 5" lawyer for denitrification.

Will denitrification happen in a fuge that sits ABOVE everything else? I'm not sure any waste will actually make it UP to my fuge. Am I looking at this the wrong way?
