How much to feed??

I have had nitrates in the 15-20 range for some time now. I do water changes every 2 weeks, for a while there every week (25%). I have been told that perhaps I feed too much, I cut back, and fish look thin. So, for 160 gal, (3) tangs 4-5", skipper dragonet (2"), lawnmower blenny (3"), firefish, (2) chromis -2", shrimp goby, (3) shrimps, 10" clam, (2)sand sifter stars, 12 snails. How much to feed, and how often? Give it to me in terms of frozen cube size, even though I feed other things, it will give me an idea. Also, how much Seaweed Selects should I hang daily- I/4 sheet, 1/2 ???

I would say pinch some food from a cube and feed it to them. Do it until you see them starting to not eat what you are giving them.

Small Trick

Small Trick

take the cube and put it in a small bowl and let it thaw then feed just like you would with flake or others give a a teaspoon full of the thawed mix and wait till they are done then give another and wait when they do not hangaround or it takes more than 1 1/2 minutes to eat all of it then back off 1/2 spoon next feeding and try that . One good felosiphy is to feed less more often another is if food hits the bottom then you are done just because fish eat does not mean they are hungry
good luck

Here is the problem: 1 cube of most frozen= 1/2 tsp.

I would feed at least 1 cube daily... three tangs alone would probably be able to scarf that up, with the smaller fish getting the smaller leftovers.

I dont hang the nori in daily, maybe once a week. And not very much when I do (maybe 2 sq. in). I have a angel, rabbit, and tang that eat it.

The small amount of feeding shouldnt be adding to your nitrates, unless you have no removal system. If the food is settling somewhere and rotting it might be. What skimmer do you have on the system, and how much flow? Also test your source water for nitrates.

Tunze 9010. No nitrates in the source water that is measurable- use the same water in the QT- zero nitrates in there.
