I am in the process of setting up a 55 gallon and currently have a 20 gallon that has been thriving for about 2-3 years. For the 20 I have been using a maxi 400 to move water around, and that has begun to fail on me. I've replaced it temporarily with a maxi 1200.

Is the Maxi Jet 1200 too much water movement for a tall 20 gallon tank?

I currently have two percula clowns, LR, with some sponges, tube worms, small clams, and snails. Eventually everything will be in the 55, but I'm probably a month or two away from that.

I'm hesitant to mess with things that are working well. I'd get another MJ400 ASAP.
A powerhead that's failing due to the buildup of calcareous growths can often be revived by soaking it in vinegar (acetic acid).

You are going to create a wave in your tank that will start to spew on to your floor w/ that MJ1200. Too much pressure and not enough room to move the water.

I gave one to my bro-in-law for his 36ga and that's exactly what it did.
