How much, when, and how often?

I feed mine a silverslide the size of the carapice every other day. I have a Peacock Mantis about the same size as yours. I'm looking for a place that sells live silverslides or saltwater feeder fish. There cooler to watch and i dont care if my mantis gets agressive, as i'm not puting anything with him.

My advice on what to feed mantis shrimp has always been a varied diet rich in crab, shrimp and shell fish available in many fish markets (clams, scallops, mussels). We also find that pile worms work well. I prefer live food, but frozen shrimp (whole if possible) work. For are smaller animals (under 3") we also use live adult brine shrimp. A soak in a nutrient such as Selco seems to help.

Recently we have been experimenting with other commercially available foods. The one that seems to work best, at least a supplement, is freeze dried krill (Jumbo whole). Our stomatopods love them, their color is returning, and they are easy to use and not terribly expensive (I bought enough for several hundred of feedigs for about $30). I feed a 5' O. scyllarus one, 1 inch krill a day and that seems adequate. The krill float when dry, but when given directly to the animal, they seem to have no trouble eating the entire krill. Be careful not to over feed, however. They break apart and disperse throughout the tank making them hard to remove.

There is a place here where we get our clams when we steam them. They are alive when purchased and iced. Should I just drop one of them in there?

And it doesnt matter which ones as long as there alive and fresh and mussles, clams, or scallops correct?

Also if you wanted to purchase enought to last a little while what would be the best way to keep them alive? Would they just live in the saltwater in my mantis tank until he wanted them?

John

I just drop a clam in and watch to make sure that the stomatopod opens and eats it. There is nothing like a dead clam to foul a tank.

The shellfish you by in the market generally come from cold waters, so they won't last too long in a warm marine tank. You can keep them for a couple of days in the fridge, damp, wrapped in paper towel, etc., but these guys have had a pretty rough trip and by the time they make it to your fish counter, they are not in good shape.

So any live clams from your fishmarket he would love correct?

I did want to make my tank into a small reef. If I got him started on clams would he eat a larger maxima clam?

John

I doubt it, but you never know with stomatopods. The only times I have seen them attack Trdacna have been when the clams were very small (under an inch) or when they were trying to rearrange the scenery.

So a 3-4 inch clam wouldnt be a problem. How about any other corals or softies that should be avoided?

I love my mantis but I also love reefs and I am unhappy with the way the tank looks. I want some color and life in the tank. I think it would be so much better.

Also, so about the fishstore clams. Anything live and fresh (very small, around 1 inch) would be fine for him right?

I feed my mantis small shrimp pellets, pieces of scallop, and hopefully I'll be able to pick up some of the jumbo freeze-dried krill. I was tempted to buy a small emerald crab to see if the peacock would eat it or not.

Occasionally, the mantis grabs some of the Omega One flake food I toss in for the lone damsel in the tank.

I wish I could stop by to check out your mantis...

I just noticed the mantis picking on one of the scarlett reef hermits in the tank.

I assume the hermit will be a goner soon. I find it a little odd since about five minutes earlier, I'd tossed in a pea sized chunk of scallop and he tossed it out of his hole a few minutes after gnawing on it.

I just came from the grocery store and purchase 1 little neck clam and set it in the tank. He keeps pushing it away.

It is about 1 inch big.

Do I need to get smaller? That was the smallest they had.

Dr. Caldwell -

I recently visited a LFS and looked around for the jumbo freeze-dried krill. I found what they called jumbo freeze-dried krill, but they were nowhere near one inch in size.

Do you ave a brand you could forward me to? I've been trying to start a rotating diet for the mantis I have and I'm following along with the 'the more the merrier' routine.

Gamera,

Get the number to Sherman Tank Co. it is off of Federal

They sell packages of frozen krill, they are over 1 inch each. My mantis loves it.

The product we are using is called "Jumbo Shrimp Freeze Dried Treat" by Tetra. I'm sure there are others out there as good or better, but these are convenient.

I'd checked out the Sherman Tank Ch. They were fresh out and I wasn't willing to wait for them to unpack.

I'll most likely it te other LFS around here and see.

Tanks for the label Dr. Caldwell. Hopefully I'll get the mantis on a diverse rotating diet soon.
