How often do seahorses breed?

There is no set stats for specific pairs.
There is variance with different species with some having the capability to produce in any season, and others just specific seasons.
However when it gets down to individuals, they often shut down and don't produce for varying time periods even though they are a species that normally would be producing.
For erectus and reidi you are looking at just over 2 weeks generally speaking, if conditions are suitable to not have them shut themselves down.

If you have Erectus and there is a successful egg transfer your fry will arrive (like rayjay said)in about 2 weeks. The Erectus will breed the same day the fry are born or soon after. This may happen for the next few months. (yes-- you can have 1 to 6 births over the next few months) I have had them breed for 3 months starting in Oct to Jan and another pair from Jan to April and stop until the next year. Have fun!

Awesome! I'm currently setting up to breed clowns so I already have holding tanks, but if the seahorses breed then I'll have to get the rotifers sooner. I have lined seahorses if that helps any.
Thanks guys!

Oh cool, now with the brine they can only be a few hours old right? I read that the baby seahorses have a hard time digesting them after that...?

To the best of my knowledge, the first instar stage is the hardest to digest.
Also, as the nauplii don't all hatch out at the same time, and because they loose their fatty acid profile so fast, it's normally recommended to grow them out for a day until they reach the second instar stage where the digestive tract is complete and they can feed. (they cannot eat at Instar I stage)
Then, enrich them for at least 12 hours, and even better, do a water change with new enrichment and complete a second 12 hour stage.
Rinse well and feed to the fry.

Cool thanks for the info, I'll make sure to do that with the brine.
I'll try to take a pic if I catch them dancing again.

I have a question and I am afraid that it is going to sound cold. If seahorses have that many fry that often, and you are not prepared to attempt to raise them...what do you do with them. I ask because I ordered 2 female seahorses but I was sent a male and female. Well they wasted no time and in a matter of a week and a half they began to court and I believe he is pregnant now. Unfortunately I care for my husband's mother full time and she is dying of congestive heart failure. I am just not in a position to raise fry right now. What do I do....humanely euthanize them, send them to someone who can raise them???? I heard they are pretty fragile to mail as fry but I don't know anyone here who might like to try it.

I got the idea to post on the forum of my local reef club if anyone would like to give it a try to raise the fry. Also my lfs are keeping dwarf SH right now so maybe they might even want to give it a go. They are already hatching and enriching bb. I am going to ask them. If not the store maybe even one of the employees. Hopefully one of those avenues will open up an opportunity for the fry.

I think I have found multiple options for homes for my SH fry so I am very happy about that!

That's awesome, if you were local, I'd love to try it. But I guess I'll have to just keep working on trying to get mine to breed :)

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. If your ponies are dancing I am thinking that your chance at raising fry is coming some day.😊
