You know, someone brought up in a similar thread that the clowns may not actually be "feeding" the anemone, but just bringing the food into the anemone to keep it safe so they can eat it later. I could certainly see this, since although my clown takes food into the anemone, it seems like she makes an effort to keep it from getting too close to the mouth, especially the larger pieces.
I personally think it's some of both. It's instinct, really. My GSM will eat some of what she's brought into the anemone, but the anemone also usually gets some of it too. It's win/win.
As for feeding my anemones, I personally don't worry about it that much, but try to feed them about once every 10 days. They have been healthy and growing and displaying nice colors for 8 mos now so I see no need to step up feedings drastically. They tend to get small quantities from the GSM almost daily anyway, in addition to general filter feeding and light.
