How often to change carbon

would 4x that work on a monthly routine?

Every Sunday I do a 20%/5gal water change along with my carbon/gfo change. It's been working so far on my 25 gal nano. I only have to clean the glass once a week and my gha is staying short and not spreading. I'm shooting for a low nutrient sps tank as I find it easier to keep a clean tank rather than a dirty one.

I use a less sophisticated but more commonly available measuring device - my nose. I stick my head in my sump and if I start to notice a strong odor it's time to change my carbon. My nose usually tells me I need to change the carbon every 3-4 weeks,

I have allergies so by the time I smelled something bad it would be horrible.

+1,,as soon as the day comes that I smell the dirty ocean smell in the room the tank is in,,its time to change the carbon..

I uusethe cheapo stuff from walmart its like 5 bucks cant remember the brand i use slightly more and its usually about 20 to 25 days before i can smell the aquarium.

This is when i change it out. Ounce the stuff cant take no more stank out i replace it. I only use it to remove the smells of the tank away.

So another questioned should be asked along with how long. How much carbon do you use for what size tank? Is there a ounce per gallon ratio that is good?

I use 3/4 cup of small lignite carbon from Brs in my reactor. 75 gal sps DT. I change every 3-4 weeks. I prefer this stuff to the ROX as I feel it's less aggressive

im running carbon in one of those aquarium pharm tap water filters fed with a rio 400.
it holds quite a bit of media. im kinda guessing that the carbon on the bottom half or so will deplete quicker than the top half.
perhaps when changing out media can just replace the bottom half while moving the top half to the bottom and adding new gac on top half.
thoughts on this?/
