how often to clean rodi barrel

I was wondering how often do people clean out their rodi storage barrel. I have a 55 gallon drum in my closet that stays full of rodi water... I keep a heater in it and a maxi jet for water movement.. I noticed a slim growing inside my barrel tonight... had to take it down and scrub it. Any idea what that slim is and how often should you have to clean it..

I think a clean container, sealed with just zero tds ro/di water in it shouldn't have any growth in it at all. I have a 45g translucent white barrel in my garage and I haven't cleaned it since I had a TDS issue due to an RO membrane failure a few years ago.

Is your barrel open at the top (as in the top of the barrel is removed)? Regular contact with the air will allow all kinds of 'stuff' to get in your water and grow.

How long do you keep the ro/di water?
Is it a system that stays top off so the barrel is always full? Consider cycling the water. That is, use it and drain the barrel until it's almost out of water and then refill it. I let mine get down to somewhere between 1g and 10g before I make more ro/di water.

My barrel is open topped. I try to clean it every month but that doesn't always happen.. I have looked for a lid without any luck... might be time for a change of setup.. care to link a pic of the type of barrel you use

Here's my barrels... They go for around $89ea through Tractor Supply. Mine are 35g but they carry all different shapes and sizes.

My ATO bucket has a lid with a small hole cut in the top to run my ATO tube. I check it about once a month to see if there's any build up. I normally start seeing dust by then, dump it out, clean with vinegar and RO/DI.

I store RO/DI in a 30 gal tub with a lid. I clean it maybe once every 3-4 months w/vinegar/RODI.

I find myself wiping out the inside of my salt water container (Rubbermaid trash can) after every water change. I don't know what the issue is, but I end up with this brownish film. I do keep a lid on the container while it just contains RODI water. After I add salt, it is not sealed due to the wires from the heater and the pump (for mixing the salt). I have taken the pump completely apart to wash it, but it continues to happen.

I'm stumped.

I'd love to try to recreate Bluefish's setup, but feel like I'd have a bigger mess with this brown film.

I have stopped using a power head to circulate the RO/DI water and found that the black slime i used to get is no longer a problem. I only use a pump now to aerate then mix saltwater. After a day I remove that pump and no snot grows there either. I typically have a full trash can of RO and salt water on hand and have not had to clean them in months. I usually cover the salt but lost the lid for Ro so that is always uncovered.

Weird. I have two containers - one for salt and one for the RO/DI. I haven't seen any slime/snot in the RO/DI container. I don't recall when the last time was that I wiped it out.

I only get it in the salt mixing container - after I add the salt, heater and the pump for mixing.

Here is my RO/DI system and 45g storage unit. I believe it came from Toledo Plastics at a time when they were doing free shipping! The RO is a Cirqua system that makes about 45gph (over 1000g per day). Currently I'm not using the pressurized storage tank under the RO. This was from a coffee house that went out of business. There is a prefilter, 2 RO membranes (in the chrome cylinders) and a post filter. The pump drives the system at 150psi.

I dump my reject water in a cistern and use it for doing laundry.

Wow nice clean setup!!! Do you premix salt in one? If so does that affect anything growing inside?

The right side container is for saltwater. I dont really have an issue of growth inside because unlike most, I only make water a day or so before I need it and try to keep my tanks empty the rest of the time. Was never a fan of leaving water sitting around.

I too get a brownish buildup fairly quick in my salt barrel. The brand is Rhino-Tuff 35gal trash can. I fill and mix 30gals a day or two before the first of the month, then on the 1st of every month I do a 15gal WC. Leave a powerhead circulating 24/7, and then on the 15th of every month I use the remaining 15gals. After a few months use I have a brownish film left on the walls.

It wipes very easy, which is good but makes me think it's in the water column also. I run my new saltwater through a 100micron sock just because. Not sure if that does anything or not.

My 55g RO/DI container has been rinsed once in 2 years when it got contaminated by sawdust due to a loose lid. Since I usually use 35 -45 gallons a t a time the water is in the container for about a week at a time. So far no growth.
