How old are your DSB's??

3 years running a remote DSB. I dont care for the look in my tank so I set one up in a remote refugium. 0 nitrates.

I agree with myth, I know many people with DSBs over 5 years old and no negative effects. Just like anything else its needs some TLC to stay up to par.

Regardless of substrate, some tanks will crash. Poor husbandry will increase the probability of this occuring. I don't think anyone has anything to worry about with them being a "ticking time bomb". Many people (and their livestock) have enjoyed the benefits for 10 + years.

Thanks to everybody.. I'm always more engaged with DSB..
Hope to show you the tank's setup in next months, I've to wait in March for my new home and then start with this new adventure!
For now, enjoy some pics from my 15 gals DSB Nano..

benf would be a good person to talk to. He has a tank I want to say it's 200g give or take, saw it in person. He uses a DSB, ALOT of LR to include a sump full of it, and UV. That's it! I didn't see a skimmer anywhere. Tank is beautiful!

Our 75g reef has a 6" DSB going strong for almost 3 years now, no worries. We also have at least 6" DSB in the fuge. We have a huge population of amphipods, copepods, micro-stars, and Collonista snails constantly reproducing. Plenty of bristle worms, too.

When we get the new-to-us 300 gallon reef going, we'll have a remote DSB (possibly more than one) for esthetic reasons.

5 years; previous tank went 7 years. Took tank down owing to lack of time, no problems from dsb.

Ive had my 55 gal as a reef for 23 years.
I started with carribsea sand and once read in Julians reef notes about bare bottom being easier to care for so removed it.
I did'nt like BB at all and after about 6 months added sand again.
That was prolly 15 years ago or more.
I have about 5 inches of sand and I do use a small vacuum and siphen the top layer of my sand with each water change to remove detritis. Never had a crash or anything.
I also have 5-6 inches of sand in my 150 gal which Ive had for 11 years. Same thing I vacuum it with each water change.

4 years, as long as it's syphoned during minimally monthly WC, i see no problems, BUT if i were to set up another tank, i would go BB or just a 1/2" or so of sand, why complicate things w/ a DSB...? i like mine though, just requires more attention. make sure u have enough critters to stir it up a bit and keep it clean. some say syphoning a DSB is defeating the purpose, i say it's not, either have a filthy ticking time bomb DSB, or a clean DSB...
- this issue has been BEAT to death, so u will hear all different opinions...
