I believe you can tell right away. Count the number of dark stripes on its pectoral fins. Also if you post a pic in the FOWLR section they will tell you what you have.

you can tell at a fairly young age if you have a female or male that isn't in that "cross-over" range (6 dark bands). we have such a fish, and she kept fooling us, but we're certain she's a female now that she's a bit older:
