How smart are fish

How smart are fish or other aquarium pets?.... I always wondered if my FW fish know that they are never getting out of the tank, and that the scenery will never change.

You know what i mean. Like do they see a rock and think, "oh man, i have to hide under that same place, again!" Or is it more like "oh sweet check out this new hiding place!"

some are dumb as rocks, others are surprisingly smart and curious. Angelfishes and triggers are typically considered among the smarter, dog-like fishes.

I am always amazed with my cleaner shrimp. He definitely knows when it's dinner time.

for my FW fish it always seems like they are looking for a way out, or that every time they go into a cave they are shocked to see it.

There was a study done a few months ago on african cichlids, they said they have the learning ability of a 5 yr old child. Don't know how true that is, but they are extremely smart.
