how often do ppl have mantis shrimp but do not hear the clicking noise? how else would you tell you have one? they don't just come out in the open, even at night, do they?

It depends on the species of mantis. Some are much more active than others as well. If its a small mantis it could just be feeding on pellets or whatever you feed the tank depending on if he/she is big enough to kill any hermits and snails you have.

well a while ago i had a small clownfish disappear and i looked everywhere outside the tank, looked under all the rocks, etc. never found it. it was the only fish at the time. about 1 1/2" maybe. but i havn't ever noticed any missing snails or crabs, they are all still here. so does that rule out the hcance of a mantis?

you may have a spearer...much more rare as a hitchhiker, but apparently possible. They go after fish, and usually leave shelled creatures alone.

Almost all smashers are diurnal. Why the myth that you detect stomatopods by hearing them strike at night. It does not happen unless you have the tank lighted at night. Clicks at night almost always mean snapping shrimp.
