i just got a mag pump from another rc member, the foam block smells like a baby diaper. i'm assuming this is because in it collected organisms from his established tank that died during shipment. how do i clean this? i've rinsed it a bunch but the smell is still there.

If it looks like it is used as a straining device - you can pretty much remove it. They usually cause more harm than good - a filter sock on the drain line does a better job of grabbing dietrus if desired - and they are much easier to remove and clean.

If you really want to use it - soak in RO water + bleach overnight - then rinse out A LOT (you want to get the residual bleach out of there).

As long as the chamber you are using it in is fairly free of debris you don't need it. It is designed to keep out stuff that will cause the pump to chew itself up. I have never used them with my pumps.
