how to introduce clam to new lighting setup?

yesterday i made a mistake... i shifted some of my clams (1 maxima, 1 crocea, 1 derasa) to my sump tank where i've installed a 14k MH.

i switched on the mh and left the clams there for about an hour and when i returned, all the clams were closed up and looked shriveled. quickly switched the mh off....

then i researched online and realized that i should have shielded them first to let them get used to the lighting slowly... otherwise they would get burn by the uv radiation from the mh and bleach and die.

the clams were placed high up in my rock work previously under 7 x 34W T5HO and were very healthy, although abit dull.

this morning the crocea started opening again (under a 2ft PL light) but the maxima is still closed up. can see parts of the mantle out actually but shriveled... currently i have an egg crate and a black mesh over them with the mh on... gonna check back again in awhile...

what else do i need to do to acclimatize it to the new lighting? should i put them back in the main tank first until they are stabalized first before trying again or just continue with the mh?

what wattage MH??

have they dumped any zoox. ??

is the sump plumbed to the same system??

other than using the screen method, you can decrease the photoperiod and move the clams down in the sump.

good luck and let us know how it goes.

150 MH , 14k new BLV bulb

no, haven't dumped any zoox. when they do dump it, is it like how zoanthids do it, a string of browny stuff? the mantle still have its original color from what i can tell

yes, the sump is plumbed to the same system

what is a good photoperiod for them to recover? i have decided to stop trying the mh first and use a 24W PL light... if they do open up again normally then i'll try the MH and screen again. is this advisable?

yes the zoox. will appear as a string of brown coming from the exhalent siphon.

it's hard to say what a good photoperiod would be to start, that is going to depend on the clams health and reaction. how much room do you have above the sump?? could you raise the halide and give the clams an hour or two daily of MH along with the 24WPL?? my concern is that the 24W light isn't going to be enough to keep the clams going through this tough time.

good luck
