how to keep my jumper in?

well today thankfully my wife was home when my rabbitfish jumped again. except she had to save him this time. i also have an 8" convict blenny in the tank. i have a custom canopy that has full front and sides but an open back. i'm paranoid about these two jumping out so i have the back half of the glass canopy on the tank to try and prevent an easy escape, but today it backfired on me. the wife heard the splash and some flipping around and opened the canopy to find the rabbitfish laying on the glass. she quickly put him back in and he seems to be okay this time.

what do any of you all out there use to prevent this? any ideas?
 
You can use a window screen kit and birdneting from the hardware store to make a top for your tank. I used one before and it worked really well.

only i would be concerned with is his spines getting caught in the netting. i remember how much trouble they had getting him out of the net when i got him from oddballs. it was like a 10 minute ordeal, literally.

i thought about that light diffuser plastic grid stuff, but was concerned with it blocking too much light?

I use the plastic grid they put in drop ceiling lights. You can buy it at lowes or home depot in the section where all the supplies for drop ceiling and lights are. It has 1/2 inch square holes though out, allowing air to pass freely but keeping the more suicidal fish in. It can be a real life saver and probably saved my wrasse more than once. I have a big piece I dont need but its pretty inexpensive if you just want to buy your own.

My canopy had an open bac like yours, I bought a sheet of the egg crate mentioned above, cut it to fit, and secured it with zip ties... Has worked pretty good so far, no wrasses on the carpet yet ;)
 
i didn't even consider the thought of mounting it that way! that sounds like an excellent solution. i could just drill a couple of small holes and use some zip ties and VIOLA! problem solved!

i just seems like it would blocks a lot of light when placed below the light itself. not to mention the color blending issues.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction. looks like a trip to lowes tomorrow and a very easy fix.
 
Mine would be a little harder since i only have a light assembly, but it is something i will contemplate. Good suggestion, thanks.
 
I have seen a few frames built for tanks without canopies. You get some of the molding pieces and paint them to match the trim on your tank, fit to the dimensions of your tank. then you take fishing line and wrap the pieces to make your own .5" grid. The fine filament blends and isn't noticeable. Works well for small to medium tanks as you can just remove the frame when you need to work in the tank.

well after two more of the exact same episodes yesterday, i got it all fixed up last night. i would post a pic, but it looks almost identical to brandons. so now i have put my mind at ease.

upon completion my wife explained where he kept jumping up and getting stuck. whole thing probably wouldn't have happened if she didn't keep some extra seaweed on top of the glass for "easy access" later. evidently when my rabbitfish finished the seaweed in the tank, he was still hungry and i gotta give him credit, he did figure out how to get to that "easy access" seaweed as he kept landing with his mouth less than an inch from it. kinda makes me wonder how many other times it could have happened but he managed to flip himself back down.

anyway, thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions and especially to brandon for that pic. that really helped.

Glad you got it fixed! lol funny story, I think I'll start being more careful when lay my sea weed too! :fun2:
