How to kill palys?

I have these giant palys that came as hitchhicker on my rocks and they're stinging the crap out of my nearby SPS. What's the best way to kill these and stop them from overtaken? I tried pry one out and they were all slimy.

I would break the rock off where they are at if you can. Be careful prying them off because you can get palytoxin poisoning. Some people say use Kalk paste but most have only had limited success. I've heard of people killing them with the aiptasia zappers as well.

My friend, with all due respect, I wouldn't kill them. There are numerous methods to remove them based upon size, size of the rock they are attached to, where they are attached, location of rock, (be it a foundational rock supporting the reef or otherwise).

Personally I wouldn't try scraping them either, which in and of itself could cause the mortality I'd hope you'll avoid. Also, though many will publically state the scraping/manual removal of palythoas underwater is safe, there is well and lenghty published literature which states the documented proof that PLTX does indeed exist in a small numbers of palythoas. Not to cause you any alarm, but the scraping of palythoas under water and possibly having a minute cut in your cuticle, could cause some possible issues even if PLTX isn't present. Though far fetch, it's possible.

If you could provide a macro picture or details on where the Palythoas are relative to the SPS colony, number of polyps etc., I'd be glad to help you.

Is it feasible to move the SPS colony?

Good luck

I just hate seeing perfectly healthy polyps killed if and when they can be removed safely.

I did make a post about trying Kalk paste and the aptasia zapper. It would be better though to break them off if possible or remove the Sps and trade in the paly rock for a fresh rock. The problem with prying them off or trying to kill them us that the base can still be in the rock crevices and the palys can re-generate from that tissue making them difficult to get rid of. The best thing to do is to get rid of the rock and save the Sps off of the rock. It may not matter to some people but to many of us(not all) treat corals like the living creatures they are. It might be upsetting to some of us that there is a complete disregaurd for the creatures we care for. Also, it is offensive to come on here and make snide comments about the people trying to help. You won't gain any respect on here or in life being that way to people.

I wonder if this would be better than aptisia X after all people add mall to their tank sorest. Must be better then aptisia X right? I will have to do more research on this. I adjust afraid it will not be as effective.

I don't think people have much success with aptasia x or Kalk paste because they are similar. It doesn't kill the base of the polyps so new polyps can grow. I saw a demonstration on the aptasia zapper and they said it worked on zoas and palys. It worked well on aptasia and majanos for sure.

The thing with killing those big palythoas in the tank is I'd be worried about the nutrients they leach while they're decomposing. In a smaller tank it could cause some algae issues depending on how many there are, and there could be some toxicity issues too.

the zapper you speak of is that electric one right?
I have seen those before but they seem pricey. I guess you should never have to buy or reload it maybe it is worth it.
yeah if I had a rock of 20 or so maybe run carbon and only zap 5 at a time or a week or so. hopely they do not grow faster than you can zap.

All the threads I found about killing unwanted palys or gsp, 90% of the replies said it is cruel and should give corals away. Removing rocks bc of a few unwanted corals is the last thing anyone want to do. People kill aptasia, flatworms, or red bugs are perfectly normal bc they're consider pest. They're living animals too right? Well these palys are pest to me. They have killed two of my nearby SPS. They are just palys for god's sake, not animals with feelings.

Try to exchange the rocks in your local pet shop!
They probably will give you more bare rocks because of the zoanthids on them.
Or exchange for smaller rock with zoas on them.

If you don't want to do that you can kill them with saltwater jets in the bucket with old aquarium water while you do water changes.
Use a powerhead with hose and the jet would take care of them.
Rinse off the rock in another bucket with aquarium water and return the rock to the system.

Grandis.

Found this old thread... LOL now I have the same "problem". Nice zoas, colorful zoas, but now way too many zoas ;)
No way that I could remove what they grow on, I would have to take the nano tank apart.
Anyway, someone suggested other solution, to simply cover them with something that will block their light. Like 2-part epoxy molded into something flat to be put on top of unwanted zoas.
