How to make a spray bar to replace the AGA overflow nozzle

sure you could do a closed loop system. you can do just about anything with a spray bar. you could put one on the output of a power head if you wanted to.

true. try it and let me know how it works. would be good info to know.
Well, after nearly one full month, I finally began filling my prop tanks with water. Actually, I filled the sump with water first, then turned on the main pump and let that fill the tank.

I turned on the pump, and watched the water coming squirting out of my spraybar that I had made (tried to drill at an angle to make a more turbulent flow) and.........

the water shot out of the pairs of holes in perfect "X"es! So, I guess the angled hole thing does work, and from the looks of it, the flow is exactly what I was looking for.

The water sprays out at a slight downward angle and the two 45 degree angle paths meet right at the middle of the tank forming an X shaped flow pattern.

Does anyone know where to get that silflex pipe that electric130 used? I tried looking at Lowe's and could not find it, I even tried to find some schedule 80 PVC and nothing....their selection of fittings and parts is terrible.

Any suggestions besides purchasing from a plumbing wholesaler?

Thanks,

Eliyah

esmith, Lowes and the depot are crap... in my experience. For all my DIY projects, I have found almost everything at Ace Hardware. It's pretty amazing, they're a quarter the size of the other places, yet they have everything hehe. If you don't have Ace around there, pay no attention to me ;)

i got everything at Lowes. that's all stated in the first paragraph of the first page. i try to avoid HD. i don't like them as much as lowes. i think all the orange colors get on my nerves.

we don't have ACE down here, but we did in Ohio. they never had half the stuff that Lowes did and if they did, they were more expensive. but let's stick to the topic at hand. spraybars, not suppliers.

it's in the irrigation section. it's sold in 5 foot sections or huge rolls. just ask an associate in plumbing for help. i'm pretty sure it's actually called "Sil-o-Flex"

Here is what I ended up with, 1/2" PVC bushed down from the 3/4" pipe at the first 90 coming over the edge into the tank.

It's working great, thanks for the great idea electric130.

I don't even have to run my other PH (MJ 900) now because there is just so much flow coming out of the spray bar.

glad it worked out for you. i'm surprised that Lowes didn't have the siloflex of even sch 80! at the lowes around here, they're in the same isles.

I picked mine up at Lowe's this weekend. The 5' lengths were in a rack next to the cast iron pipe. HD didn't carry it.

Anyway, plumbed the bar as my main return and it works like a champ. The only problem I had was plumbing over the side. I originally used some loc-line (black flexipipe in the initial pics of this thread) I had as the "U" but it leaked like a sieve when I fired up the pump. Ended up using PVC instead.

My closed loop is soon to follow: SQWD to 2 spray bars.

I actually found some schedule 80 pieces of PVC at Home Depot in 2.5 & 5' lengths, but had already make the spray bar with the schedule 40 PVC.

It's cheap and easy should I decide to change the spray bar to the 80, but you can't even see the bar anyway when you look at the tank straight on, you have to look up to see it.

esmith, click on my website and look at the first page. if you look real close, you can see the spray bar at the top. it's almost completely covered in coraline and you don't even notice it. compare that to the pic below it and you'll see the difference.

Mine's the same - you can only see it when you look up.

Yep, can't even hardly see it. That is what I figured, over time it will just blend right in with the rest of the coraline algae.

Great looking tank by the way!
