When I did latin at school, I was taught 'ae' is pronounced like 'eye'. Hence the modern German title of 'Kaiser' is the actual pronunciation of its origin, 'Caesar'.

So.... ch-eye-toe.

ch-eye-toe just sounds better doesn't it? I guess it really doesn't matter how you pronounce it just as long as the person your speaking to understands what your talking about. cycloplezze is another one I have issues with pronouncing.

Then again, in modern English, as in encyclopaedia, paediatric or caesar (seezar), the ae is often just commonly pronounced as if it was just a standard double ee instead.

I also pronounce it Ch-eye-toe (however I have no idea if it's correct). Why can't the come up with simpler names...

I propose... Afro-algae

Aptasia is another one I struggled with until I realized it was the same as the flower.

What flower? It wouldn't surprise me if there was an alternate pronunciation, but everyone I've ever heard speak the word aiptasia aloud says "ap-tay-zhia."

FWIW, I vote kee-toe as well.

"In case you don’t know the animal anemones from the look-alike flowers they’re named after, some science regarding anemones period and then on to ways to rid your system of Aiptasia."

When I read it I thought "oh yeah, my mom has some of those planted... so that's how it's pronounced." and everything was right in the world... until now.

But you know what? I'll be darned if I can find a single other reference on google or a picture of this "flower" it was suposedly named after.

guess it goes to show believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see.

Sorry about that - I often have that effect on people.:)

it's "kee-toe".

the "ch" is pronounced with a "k", and when the "ae" is used together, the "a" is silent, only hearing the "e" sound.

ae as pronounced in modern latin is "ee". ae as ""eye" is how the romans would have pronounced it, but scholars and scientists usually use the modern pronunciation unless they are directly referring to it's ancient usage. Chaetomorpha is a latin name for taxonomy purposes not an ancient roman word so I think it is more proper to pronounce it "keetomorfa" so to speak.
