How to qt anthias.

Im interested in 5-6 ignitus, or dispar. But I do not want to risk disease. I have a cupramine qt tank running but as I understand they don't do well in copper. I want to introduce them before any other fish.

did TTM on my lyretails with two rounds of prazi. same as everyone else that comes in the door.

What is TTM

Tank Transfer Method.
There is a detailed writeup in the fish disease forum but basically you transfer fish to a fresh tank every 3 days (no longer than 72 hours) for 12 days to break the life cycle of ich. You need 2 basic setups which you sterilize between uses. Works excellent for eliminating ich.

I'm a bit confused on this as well. I'd like to get a couple more lyretails, but I've never been a big fan of multi fish QTs.

Can you introduce them one at a time? Then I could just buy one at a time, TTM, formalin dip and call it good.

I have simply observed all my anthias in qt, typically 8 weeks. Good opportunity to fatten them as well. None of mine have come with any skin parasites, though body ulcerations have been a problem lately (could be uronema). Personally I see no issues with quarantining a group at the same time; I've done it dozens of times. If fish are coming from the same source, any cross contamination has likely already happened.

Good point.

Should have added ..... Though I try not to QT fish from different sources together. Trouble with anthias is that they can gender transition in QT. I had this happen with two groups of bimacs. Had to rehome one of the males, bummer. Then another female changed in the display so I have two males anyhow .

That was my other concern.

Will the other male eventually turn back to female if it's smaller than the existing male in the DT? Or will they just fight to the death?

I've never had a male turn back to female. Don't think it's possible, though not certain. In my case, since the second males changed in the presence of the first, they largely tolerate each other. I think if you tried to introduce two fully formed males into a new tank things would not go so well. I have multiple Bartlett and Resplendent males as well; though again they all started together as females.

Hmmm. That's problematic if I'm going to try to find my big male a couple of ladies in a 75. Two males would be ww3 in a place that small.

Maybe I should just keep him single. He seems pretty content.

Sorry to threadjack

Well I hate ttm honestly. My pos rodi system died and I have to buy my water which makes it unbearable. It really bums me out that now my copper setup will be really tough to utilize since they need to be added first. I guess not necessarily though.

TTM + post TTM observation can be a bit of work, but it's a far sight better than having velvet or anything else wipe out your tank again.

I would probably get a replacement RODI unit before I started worrying about bringing in more fish. It will be more useful long term.

Thanks for explaining

well due to a stupid cheap sale at my local lfs I have 3 shiny new squarebacks in qt, I diluted the copper and i'm gonna keep doing wc's and run carbon. I didn't plan on buying but for $15 a piece I could not refuse. I love them so far, very funny to watch, and one is on its way to becoming male.

People have been having bad luck with anthias recently, there is something going around at the wholesalers. I would do a formalin dip immediately upon getting them home, and put them right into an antibiotic like nitrofuracin green.

Yeah i got 5 from live aquaria and only one made it. Although my five barletts direct from Hawaii from Zoa collectors perfect.

Would you put all 5 anthias in the same 5 gallon bucket for TTM?
