how to remove a sponge from my squamosa shell

I was inspecting the shell of my new squamosa clam and noticed something that looks like a sponge on the shell and was wondering if anyone can suggest how to clean this off!! Thanks Dean.
 
I have found that my clams don't seem to be bothered by stuff like that. The picture below shows a Crocea covered with Green star polyps on one side and Xenia on the other. In this picture you can tell I trimmed back the Xenia.

I would leave the sponge on there. It won't hurt anything and will actualy contribute to better water quality.
