How to split my shroom

I have an awesome hairy mushroom. It was one of the first corals that I started with. I have to give thanks to my friend ReefPimp#1, he gave my first four or five corals to start my reef. My question is how do I get my shroom to split, or how do I frag it with out hurting it and killing it?

I would like to have one or two more in my tank, and just want to be safe. Any thoughts??

My hairy shrooms can handle a violent butchering with no ill effects. I would say a simple slice with a razor will get it splitting, cut it into quarters and see what happens. I would use a new, clean blade.

edit: Mine are a bit different species than yours so you might want to wait for more opinions but in general shrooms can handle being sliced up.

If you are going to 1/4 it ,try to get a piece of the mouth in each section!
It is awful pretty!
How long have you had it?
Given time it will probabably produce moor shrooms on its own!

Thanks for the compliments. I have had ot since the first of the year. It was given to me as a starter coral from a good friend. It wasn't as big then. When My clown started hosting in it, it exploded with growth. So cutting it is the best way to go?

Nice mushroom. A friend of ours is tearing down his tank, and getting rid of all of his soft corals, and gave us a few of those. I just minutes ago tried my hand at cutting up one of the purple discosoma that he gave us. If all goes well with those, I think I'll try one of the hairies. That's awesome that a clown will host in those. I might try that in our system.

Mine split after they get about 5" Dia. I started with 2 and about a year later I have 9.
You could just slice it off the rock and than cut it in half and the part that is left behind will grow a new shroom.
I once moved two rocks that one of the shrooms was attached to and I ripped the shroom in half and they both survived. so I know that are pretty though to kill.

I hope that it will work, I might try it this week. When it is fully extended it is about 6" across. The base is probably about 1 1/2 -2" across. It is one of my favorite corals in my tank. The bad thing is that I have had a baby yellow eye tang for a couple of months. He was a little hog that was only about an 1.5" long. He was doing awesome and got along great with everyone in the tank. Then out of the blue he got ick and was dead in 2 days. Two days later, the olny fish I have left is my yellow watchman. Such a tragedy. The one fish I have left hides 23 hours a day.

Has anyone watched the reefvideo about splitting shrooms???"
no, where it is!!

I spent some time this week at my favorite LFS. I was asking him this same question, and he said if it was a true hairy mushroom, that I should not have to split it at all, tha it should have done that all ready. He then questioned if it was a true hairy mushroom. After looking at his hairy shrooms, and the some of his larger ricordia, I think I have a huge green ricordia. I hope in time that I can get it to split on its own.
