How to start-up a refugium?

Hello all!

OK, as the title implies, I want to start up my refugium in my sump, and am curious as to the best way to go about it.

Here is what I am working with:
- DT: 104g actual water volume (Fujimoto 48"w x 18"d x 30"t).
- Sump: 26g actual available water volume, underneath the DT in stand.
- Drain: Eshopps 1000 overflow box with dual 1" drains, using DIY custom fabricated U-box with CPR style active siphon helper running off powerhead in the DT.
- Return pump: Mag-9.5 pushing through 3/4" PVC back to DT.
- Skimmer: EuroReef CS-6 that I bought NOS recently. (Old school, but was new in box, original buyer never installed it).
- Chiller: AquaLogic 1/4hp "Cyclone" style (Titanium cooling coil resides under the skimmer).
- DT lights are 2 each T5 48" 55w.
- Refugium lighting is single clip on fluorescent bulb.
- Alternate day/night cycled lighting for above via Coralife power controller.

Sump has been sectioned off as follows from left to right:
- Refugium compartment.
- Return Pump compartment.
- Skimmer compartment.

Drain from tank flows into refugium and skimmer compartments through separate feeds off drain manifold, then goes into central return section via baffles from each of those compartments.
Have a built-in recirculation circuit from return pump that can be used to recycle excess output directly into skimmer section.

Refugium is 5.54g actual usable volume when running (does not include the overflow area above when tank is off). Now, I know this is a small area, but this is a FOWLR set-up, and I only need the refugium as a buffer, and to grow some macroalgae and pods as food stock for future DT inhabitants. Not trying to build a reef system here, just a couple Triggers, angels, clowns, etc., and possibly a single BTA to host my paired Clarkii's (discussed in a separate thread).
Already have about 10-lbs of live rock in the refugium, and have non-skimmed water direct from DT plumbed to that area. Have it valved with the ability to slow down the flow in that chamber as well.

The system is up and running now, and I want to seed the refuge to start macro and pod growth. Have been thinking about getting a "starter kit" from LiveAquaria, but am wondering what the best way to get it to "take" is?
- Do I just shut the system down, attach the macro to the liverock in the fuge, pour in the pods, and then restart?
- Is there a "recommended" procedure that works best? If so, what is it?
- How long should it take for stability and growth to start?

Any suggestions/input greatly appreciated.

When I set mine up (5 gallon volume) I added 15 lbs of sand, ~15 lbs of cured live rock, a clump of chaeto and a couple bottles of pods. I shut the flow off going through the refugium for about an hour to give them a chance to settle rather than flowing right over into my return section.

Pods should already be living down there.. Tbh the only reason they thrive down there is that you have a small separate part of the tank with no pod "unfriendlies" that take them. As for what algae to get I'd just get some chaeto. It's easy and a well proved way to go. Also easy to get your hands on. Probably some local guy near you would offer you a bag full for a cup of coffee

Chaeto is good, but if you have tangs or any herbavores, i grew uvla really well under a par 30 warm LED from Lowes. Tangs love it, also helped to boost my pod population, since it also acts as a food sourse for them in the refugium. Also if you have some room add some mangroves. They look really nice, and are REALLY good and eating up the bad stuff.

Have been thinking about getting a "starter kit" from LiveAquaria, but am wondering what the best way to get it to "take" is? Unfortunatly reefs2go went down hill, they had awesome pods. I have gotten a variety pack form LA and was really happy with the macro algae.

- Do I just shut the system down, attach the macro to the liverock in the fuge, pour in the pods, and then restart? nope i just add it right in, i usually temp acclimate but thats all.

- Is there a "recommended" procedure that works best? If so, what is it? Add pods to sump, if you add any to display tank, only add when the lights are out. Your fish will destroy them in seconds with the lights on.

- How long should it take for stability and growth to start? i found after a week or two you should notise growth, but this all depends on water quality. I know of some people that have super clean water, macros wont live in. Too dirty can cause algae to grow over top.

I've never had Ulva grow effectively in my refugium. But I get chaeto and flame algae growing pretty well in there. Pods will migrate to the refugium naturally feeding on biofilms and such. If you want to add anything else, I might suggest something like amphipods like gammarus shrimp.... but again, that should come with the chaeto.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

OK, so as I thought, I should probably just add then let everyone/thing settle in before restarting flow in that area, got it!

Have asked a few aquaria stores locally, and nobody has pods, or chaeto, or any other macro for that matter, that is available for purchase.

Best supplier online?

Also, YES, we plan on a few herbivores, so if chaeto isn't the best for them, then what is? Is that the ulva, or is there something better?

All depends on the tank. Its hard to say since cheato grows so so for me. Its great at sucking up nutrients to clean up the tank. Good area for pods to live in as well. However not many (or any) home aquatic fish eat it. Uvla (seaweed really) for me grew really well. It is food for pods, and also can be fed to fish. If you can get a "sample pack" thats probably the best way to get a little of each to see what works best. What kind of lighting are you going to use? the "warmer" the light the better down there. Macro algae loves the red spectrum 5000-6500k seems to work well.

i used to buy pods at reef2go, but i along with many have experienced horrible cust service and quality lately. cannot go wrong with LA if you can get a few people in the area to group buy or get 225 worth of stuff for free shipping.
