This is a guess. But having taken invertebrate zoology, it makes sense to me knowing their micro-anatomy. Cut the whole thing up into pieces. The only chance is that some of the pieces from the very middle will regenerate. It may have been too long that they were isolated from water filled channels, though. Try to make sure that at least some of the pieces come entirely from the core and contain no tissue that was previously on the surface. This is a guess, but I'd love to know if it works. Many sponges are extremely sensitive to air, and the damage will spread. However, they are very well suited to being chopped up and re-growing. Of course, you should do this under water.
