How to tell flow rate?

the overflow will only tell you what your return pump is running at. to calculate your turnover add up all your pumps gph that are moving water in your main tank and divide that by the size of your tank.

Get a 5 gallon bucket and a stopwatch. Stick the hose from your return and time how long it takes to fill the bucket then do the math. Then add up the rest of your pumps as stated by kau-cinta-ku.

You can calculate it by measuring the height above the weir on your overflow. It is a difficult measurement though and can sometimes be innacurate. Other than that, the only way to get a true measurement is with a bucket. If your going to calculate it from the pump perfromance, make sure to include head loss by using the RC head loss calculator.

The manufacturers specifications on pump flow for a given head are very optimistic, and estimating flow lost to pipe fittings and friction is a very rough estimate at best. Measuring the actual return to the sump is quicker, easier, and very accurate.
