how to use carbon... in a sump

so ive had a 45 gallon for a yr, and no sump. i use an aquaclear to run my carbon thru the tank.

well ive upgraded to a 90, with a sump and fuge.

How / where do you place the carbon in the sump? i have regular carbon and a filter bag just kinda sitting in there, but it doesent seem like it would be nearly as effective as the aquaclear constantly pouring water thru it...

where do u place your carbon in the sump?

Place it in a high flow area. Mine is right where the overflow dumps into the sump so water has to pass through it.

my returns (from my overflow) dump in the same part that my skimmer and skimmer pump are. think that would be ok or would it take away from skimming?

I have read that skimming will be more efficient if carbon is placed after skimmer intake. Carbon absorbs some organic compounds wich will sit in your sump as opposed to being eliminated from water completly through skimming.
I'm setting up a sump now for a 45gal w/ limited cabinet space so I may need to get a smaller skimmer to accomplish this. I have a 10 gal with a ets reefdevil downdraft skimmer.I may lift the skimmer a bit so the outflow from the skimmer pours over a bed of carbon.
In your case you have many more options.Do a search on sumps and you will see some great do it your self setups.

That's what I do - hang the bag of carbon over the baffle and the skimmer exits directly over it.

I use a phos reactor and a 606 mini jet pump. It is located in between my skimmer and return pump.

I run about 75gph through it
