I am considering making an online pirchase of livestock and am wanting a clam. How well do they do in transit and has anybody bought a clam online and how did it do in shipping? thanks guys.

where did you get your croceas from skinz. My large crocea i baught off a guy that broke down his take died but you 2 derasa clams are doing great in 2 weeks almost and inch of new shell. i got to post i love them.

Sorry I won't tell because the last time people had bad experiences and I feel it was my fault that they bought from him.

so skinz, you ordered 4 clams online and they arrived well and are healthy to this day?

Must be a decent seller, but if you dont wanna reveal your secret then thats ok. I think im going to order from liveaquaria or saltwaterfish.com , although swf has small specimens and are sometimes a bit hard to deal with but they offer free shipping. Wish I lived near a better lfs so i didnt have to worry about shipping

I received 4 clams yesterday, they are all looking great.

Most of my clams have been purchased online.

I would buy from liveaquaria first.

It really depends on the time in transit, season of year, and whether the clams are packaged correctly. We receive dozens of clams a week and have gone through many vendors (until we found the right one) and have found that time in transit is the most important, and most unpredictable, factor involved with shipping mortality. Secondly, there was a direct correlation with vendor and mortality rate (perhaps due to methods of packaging and shipping service). We've experienced as high as 55% mortality, and as little as 0%, but our current supplier averages about 10%, which is acceptable (although not really). Online stores may be better as you have control over shipping methods.

Well, I have never purchased a clam online, but I did have a rather unique "clam shipping" experience this past week. I was in Ft. Lauderdale, FL this week on business and found two really nice green T.Crocea clams at Coral Reef Farm Exotics, which was only about 2 miles from the airport..... so I decided I would try my chances with the TSA (airport security) and carry them onboard the plane with me. David @ CRF did a wonderful job packing them, only to have airport security force me to pour out almost all of the water in the bags!!!. The clams are about 2 inches in length, and the water just barely covered them in the bags. I thought for sure that they were goners. All in all, they spent roughly 6 hours in the bags (the temp of the water got pretty cool on the flight). I got home, acclimated them for about 20 min (eeeek) and in they went. This was Thursday night and as of today, both are doing well. I wont challenge the TSA again!

So... I would have to say that clams ship pretty well. Healthy livestock certainly make it easier.

cool, only allowed 3 oz. of fluid or something? j/k

Actually... they said that i was limited to 3.5 oz. of water. I tried to explain to them that there were marine animals in the bags that were extremely sensitive to pollutants in the water and that there was no way they would be alive if there were harmful (explosive?) substances in the bags. They didnt care.

There was a younger fella helping me at first and he seemed almost cool enough to let me pass through, but then he asked his supervisor (who was obviously on a government-induced power trip) and he made a big deal about it. I know he was just doing his job, but its sad to see that "common sense" has been abolished when going through the security checkpoint.

ok thanks, i always overnight live goods but was just wondering if some companies were better or more prefferred. I have heard swf.com usually gives out unhealthy small specimens, but i have had great success with liveaquaria, they just have expensive shipping compared to swf.com
