How would I euthanize a snail?

The need to be humane is only for humans... sorry, but you are nuts if you actually care about the best way to kill a snail. There are seriously so much more important things out there in the world that needs attention; and now I want my last 3 minutes back for reading this thread.

I don't agree with that either. I guess everyone has there own thoughts on what should be treated humanely. I have no problem dropping a lump hammer full speed down on a snail, if it's near death. But, when my previous dog developed cancer, I had him put to sleep by a vet, at his suggestion. I didn't take a hammer to him.
What about hunting? I'm not a hunter. While I did try hunting once, I quickly learned it was not my cup of tea. Is hunting humane, if it's done efficiently? If a shot is properly placed, the animal dies instantly. If it's not placed properly, the animal will suffer until it's dead. It's been done for ages, now a days it's more for sport then it is for survival, but I don't disagree with hunting.

Fish? Is it humane to take fish out of there natual habitats and put them in a 10,20,50,100 gallon tank, when it use to have the whole ocean?

I guess this topic can be never ending.

Im glad that nature took its course and survival of the fittest won out...euthanizing a snail is something that i never thought about...and taking a snail out of the tank and freezing it just because he keeps falling off the glass seems unnecessary...

There's no need to bash someone for caring about whats going on in their tank. Whether it's a snail, fish, or a coral.

If you are responsible for the care of an animal it should be treated humanely whether it's a dog, cat, fish, or even a snail.

There are so many important things going on in the world today, and yet we all find time to visit reef central, and maintain reef tanks.

....and talk about the "Death of Snails-men" LOL.

Compassion runs through your bones and soul. How deep is your choice.

I kill the snails in my yard, but if I bought one and kept it as a pet, it would be different.

I get a little sad when my feeder crickets die! I feed, water and take care of them knowing that they are part of the circle of this great eco-system we lived in.

Heck, if we didn't care about the micro-orgs in our world, where would we be? We couldn't survive with out them.

To Care or Not to Care...that is the question. If you do, great if you don't...oh well. There are enough of us out there that will pull the weight.

Not true.

Humane definition: Characterized by kindness, mercy, or compassion: a humane judge.

Why do some people feel that being compassionate towards beings other than humans is not worthwhile? If I have concern for a snail, is that some flaw in my personality, because I should take that time to worry about something more "worthy" of concern? Have you ever had a pet? A dog, maybe? My guess is no, with an attitude like that. People that draw distinct lines between which beings deserve compassion and which don't are the same people that start drawing lines between different groups of people to determine what they "deserve". :thumbdown

I totally feel you here....when I caught the crab that decapitated my flasher wrasse, I couldn't kill it. I keep it in my QT system. Guilt? No idea....but I just have a hard time killing something for no good reason.

I'll happily accept my wuss button now :D

I agree every organism on Earth serves a purpose, I'm not saying they don't. However, if you really want to tackle the issue here, finding a way to stop the chemicals and pollution being pumped into the ocean and killing the reef off in chunks is much more useful and important than feeling the need to protect your 69 cent investment.

I don't really consider coming to RC as a waste of time. I do honestly believe that part of reef keeping is learning more about our oceans, the reefs and learning about the environments for the critters we love seeing. Hopefully one day a light bulb will go off in our heads and we'll do something as a collective to REALLY help save the reefs.

Has anybody seen the "Will it blend" videos on google? Check them out - they blend marbles into powder, an ipod, a coke can with a chicken, all kinds of crap.....Will the snail blend??

Claimed to be the most powerful blender ever.

Best to ask re a snail early, rather than be confronted cold by a large favorite fish or other creature that urgently needs the same service. All we do with these tanks teaches us something, and this is not a bad thing to have thought through.
