How you handle not perfect frey?

Hi,

in my self-image of responsible fish keeping and breeding it is clear that I don't sell / give away fish that do are not 100% ok. Meaning no gill or jaw deformations and maybe even not missbarred anemon fish. I did the same in my heavy breading times of Tanganjika fish and it is kind of a personal quality approach.

I am considering keeping an predator fish (i. e. Antenarius) to "recycle" any fish that seem to have deformations or substantial missbarring etc.

How do you see this point?

I know this can be also an ethical discussion, but want to here your point of view.

I have a recycling fish for my deformed or unsaleable fish, i dont see a problem with it as how else would you dispose of your fish? freeze them then what?

Most of the foods you feed your fish are based on some sort of fish meal or some sort of aquatic meal base, if you want to take the moral high ground how can we ever justify this.

I just think in this game you have to treat your fish with the most care and responsibility you can, ethics have to fall under this and ecanomic reality, has to be a balance.

And who knows you feeding clownfish to a predator may allow you to breed that predator fish?

From my experience in freshwater, I think almost all reputable breeders practiced an almost extreme amount of culling. You have to consider that even in the wild, nature has a way of getting rid of these imperfect fish. I don't see a problem with using these frey as food.

I would not include misbars in this.

1) Misbars occur in the wild, it is normal.

2) Misbars are often in demand at the LFS.

3) Just because two misbars spawn, doesn't always mean that the offspring will have a higher number of misbarred fish.

4) There is no solid evidence that misbarring is less than optimal in the wild.

I had a snapping turtle that was more than happy to do the job. I do agree with Jhardman as far as misbars go.

Thanks for the input, I see we share the same oppinon. Unfortunately here misbars are almost not to sell - people see that as lower quality :(

My lfs couldn't care less about misbarring, they can sell every oc I can produce. All they ask is "does it look like Nemo?" One store told me that if I could breed oc's with one pec smaller than the other I'd be a rich man

What we are seeing here I think is a perfect example of "crass american values" vrs the "high brow perfectionism" of some european nations.
