Hi folks! I've posted a hello message in the newbies area but I figured is say hello here, too. I'm in Round Lake so I guess this is my new home!

I've been reading (and watching) a lot about reefing for the past couple months and can't wait to start my own tank. Which isn't to say that I plan on rushing it. I've been taking notes on how long I'd have to cure my rock before setting up the tank... And how long to cycle the tank before getting my first fish... Etc.

Anyway, I figured I'd say hello to my new neighbors. So far the only LFS I've gone to is Something Fishy in Fox Lake.

I've been taking notes on beginner inverts, fish, corals, etc. Haven't decided between starting with a smaller 10/20 gallon tank, or starting larger at 40-120 gallons. My GUESS is that I'll go with whatever I find inexpensively first! :)

I would go as large as you can comfortably afford. Smaller tanks can be more maintenance in that it can be more difficult to maintain stable parameters. Consider the livestock you want to keep when selecting tank size as well. For many saltwater fish even a 120 would be considered too small. Best of luck getting started.

Thanks! I've been taking note of tank size needs of the critters I'm considering. Even where in the tank they'll hang out -- so I don't overload the gravel bed but have the water column untouched!

Welcome! Just take it slow when you start out, and the larger the better as far as tank size goes.

One of the best LFS in the area is ShoTank in Mundelein on rt. 45, be sure to check them out!

I was with Abbott for 2 years as a consultant followed by 10 years as a direct employee. I was part of the first wave of ADD layoffs last year. :( My job is now being done offshore.

I have many friends in AbbVie. I started in the pharmaceutical products division -- so had I not transferred to ADD a decade ago, I'd have been AbbVie. :)
