hows this lense

From what I've read it's a good lense. It will not auto focus on a d40 though. Most use manual for macros for the aquarium though.

thanks for the info, well i guess that will be a problem with using a photo box then, its hard to focus manually with the one i have.is there a comparable lense (price wise) that you can suggest

yea thats the one i was thinking i needed but was trying to cheap out, which always makes me buy something twice to get what i really want.thanks for clarifying that

Great macro lens - that is if you can find it in stock. It has been in backorder at Adorama and B&H for months now. Just an FYI- the new Di II has built-in motor so it will AF on your D40.

are you saying the one i listed the link for will auto focus or is it a new version that will

ok thanks,i guess i may end up spending the 900 for the nikon lense unless you guys could come up with another one that will work

tamron 90mm and sigma 105mm are both great lenses

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830997587

I just bought that on thursday, with the rebate its the same price as that shady hong kong ebay auction...

its not IF, and its DI II, the 90mm and 180mm macros are not upgraded yet... only the 60mm and some of their other zoom lenses. so what your seeing is the 1 and only version of the 90mm, and I dont think it will autofocus on your camera. but for the 500$ you save vs the nikon 105mm, your only 279 away from a refurb D90 that will autofocus anything you put on it...

Dan, that sigma lens is a viable option, however I 'personally' had bad experience with 2 sigma lenses being soft, but that's just my experience. I've seen some great shots with the Sigma 150 though.

You know, I wouldn't worry about not having an autofocus on a macro lens. With a paper-thin depth of field, the AF is virtually useless and you will end up manually focusing everytime.

A #2 priority with macrophotography is the TRIPOD.

That being said, I think you should really go after the older Nikon 105mm AF-D. This is the older version of the present 105mm VR and can be had for less than $400 used. This is what I recommend if you can't get the Tamron 90.

btw, I just saw your tank pic in the SPS forum.. OMG what an awesome tank!

Thank You for both the nice comment and the information on the lens.I was told the same thing a while back when i was poking around for a lens that the auto focus in not needed.the only bummer for me is when i shoot top downs from a photo box. i have a hard time manually focusing but i can get by with that and go for a better lens

It was mentioned earlier, for the price of the nikon lense you could pick up a used d70 or d80 and the sigma lense. This will give you a better camera to work with and the lens will af on those bodies.
