Howto: Use a Linksys Router as Wireless Reef Controller - WRRC

That's a good idea. I'm sure that it would be possible if written in software, but as Rich said, you'd really need to be a driver writing guru. Chances are it only has one stack, so using it for real Ethernet would then be out of the question.

Being such a small device, I would imagine that the network connectivity portion would be in hardware. You'd need to simply look up a few chips on the mobo to find out,
 
Right, that was my point, if its hardware, the ports are useless. If its software, then it takes away the need to solder things. That being said, you'd need to be able to write the drivers.

They're most likely hardware, so its probably a dead end.
 
1wire interface....you are better of using the dallas 9490 series as its the fastest usb/1wire converter and works well if going the linksys route. I also understand you can make your own serial to 1wire converter.

"Beananimal" Flow meter.....I use a turbine flow meter from radio spares .3 - 6 litres per minute. (I think) cost ~US50.00 ...they have various sizes. It provides pulses out proportional to flow rate. Mine gives out 4000 pulses per litre thus I use the 1wire pulse counter with internal battery. It just counts and stores the pulses. I just read the pulses and divide by 4000 to read litres. I also capture the number of pulses on sunday nights and also at midnight every day thus I can calculate flow for the week and for the day. The counter never resets unless it overflows the 32 bit internal counter. Thats why you subtract current value of the counter from the stored value at midnight the night before. I just pop the Sunday and midnight readings into a simple script file, called weekly and daily

I had began work on a DIY paddle wheel counter (mouse encoder) but gave up on it because I had better things to do.

What brand of pressure sensor did you end up with and what usable depth range and accuracy have you been able to achieve?
 
Level......My pressure sensor is located on the wall outside just above my 110 litre drum....It does get effected by swings in ambient temp and in the morning the sun shines on the sensor directly. I need to build a shade. I suspect if it was installed inside it would be very good. I am measuring 0-110 litres depth of ~1000 mm, you can see on the water change graph on the prevous thread page that when ambient is stable I get a great result (green line). I am only using this measurement so that when I automate my water changes he system does not drain my Aquarium if I don't have enough in my reservior to rill the Aquarium. Thats why I monitor my resvoir level and have a flow meter on the Aquarium drain. I am using the following cct

BTW, 10kPa is 1 meter of Pure Water at sea level at 20degrees C. This might be fun to use for my sump level. Maybe two for redundancy. :)
 
I'm always too nervous when I see a good deal on ebay to post about it or ask about it in the forums. Always scared someone well also thing it's a good deal and raise the price on me. BTW I just did a search of MPX2010 on ebay and came up with nothing?

I havent read the whole thread but, has anyone mentioned using a playstation or xbox for this?

The xbox is Linux-able and is available everywhere for cheap.
Since it has enet & USB, we should be able to host a web sever & talk to X-10 & 1-Wire serial...

Just a thought.

I thought of it a long time ago, but I'm not a linux user yet. Some people got Windows to run on the first xbox, but it was too buggy. Thanks for bringing it up though. I'd like to hear what these techies say about it.
 
I'm not familior with hacking the XBox. Mine is unmodded, unhacked. The thought did cross my mind though. It is signifigantly bigger than the Linksys access point though. It almost seems like a lot though.

Personally, I wouldn't run windows on anything that I want to use as a controller.

Last night I dug out my Compaq iPaq (circa 2001) 3650 because I knew a standard ARM distro of Linux could be run on it. Unfortunately, my model doesn't have one-wire built in. The 3800 does. I'd need to find a way to do the one wire interface.

It has a nice screen, 32MB Ram, PCMCIA or CF slot, 200Mhz (?), etc.

You can get iPaq 3800 series pretty cheap on ebay too. Too bad I'm an electronics moron and need other people to pave the way for me. So hurry up guys! lol
 
Wow you can Perpet. Man if only my 3600 was that price when I bought it... Ha It's still $120 more than I'd like to spend. Somewhere I read the one of the sleeves has 1-wire, so I might look in to that.

Here I am getting suckered in.... not like I really have the time....working 60 hour weeks and got some big home improvement projects coming up.... *sigh* Need more time... Too early to retire at 25? :lol:
 
I have owned an ipaq 5555 for years, it was awesome.(till I dropped it :-/) I now have a cingular pocket PC phone edition = unlimited high speed net anywhere I get cell phone reception, which is most places I go around the city I work, live, and go to school in.

I hacked and modded my xbox and there is something to be said about the size. Would be a very easy mod to cut the size of it to 1/4 the original size. I thought about doing this to install it into the car, but didn't have the time or funds.

The hard drive in it is a normal IDE driver for a desk top. Replace that with a lap top hard drive and you can dramatically reduce the size. Next would be the CD rom. You might need to mess with the bios a bit to get it to not throw a temper tantrum about not having it, but for an aquarium monitor we really don't need it. The case is a big bulky piece of plastic lined with metal, I bet something slimmer could be found. Lastly if you are really good with hardware you might be able to find a way to change the power supply in it to something smaller.
 
Reef owners just aren't happy unless they've had to beat themselves around the head and neck with a stick to get something accomplished. :)
