HUGE Bulb Tip Anemone?

Hey Everyone,

I hve a bulb tip anemone that is about three years old and has gotten HUGE!!!!! Is there any way you can cut back these things, or will that kill him?

Anemones can be "fragged", but its not like a coral. Some people have cut BTA's and LTA's in half (including a part of the mouth on both halves) and made two.. But "cutting it back" sounds like you want to trim the anemone, and that wouldn't be good..

Isn't that the objective?
To have large healthy animals in our systems?
I would never cut an anemone in half to reduce its size.
I would get it a bigger tank.

I would sell it and replace it with a smaller one.

I've heard people say you can get an anemone to split by feeding it every day for a few days and then doing a large water change (around 50% I believe). There was an article about it in RK magazine I believe. If you could force him to split, that seems like it would be much safer than trying to "frag" him.

I'm with Finding Nemo. I mean... you should either keep it, or sell it to someone with a bigger system. But don't 'frag' it. It will split one day I'm sure.

Oh yeah, I'm definatelly not going to do anything to hurt it. It's about a foot across now and he's in a 75 gallon tank and hosts 3 clowns. I do feed him silver backs but have cut down because of his size. I may take Island Crows advice and see if I can feed him till he splits.

Not all BTA's are splitters.. Some reprodice sexually.. Its possible that it may never split, regardless of the feeding / water change regimen...

FWIW you can cut an anemone in half and they do just fine. I find it somewhat funny that people say not to hurt the anemone by cutting it. An anemone is essential a big single polyp coral. Don't you all frag your corals? I cut my giant RBTA about two weeks ago and it is doing great. I tried feeding it every day to get it to split and it didn't. So I decided to cut it and sell half off.
