Humu trigger tankmates

Whats a good tankmate for a humu? I currently have him with a clown and neon dottyback. Clown is huge 5+ inches and old. Clown is going bye bye today. Looking to get a suitable mate for the humu. 45 gallon 48x18x12 are the dimensions.

Have an 80 gallon 48x24x16 brand new but nowhere to set it up. But eventually that will be there home.

I think both tanks are to small for him and will most likely end up aggressive or stressed
Ehh hes been in a 40 breeder for 4 years until a friend gave him to me 2 weeks ago. The 45s dimensions are the same as a 75 or 90 gallon just shorter. The 80 imo is better than alot of tanks being its 48x24... if thats not suitable for a 4 inch humu everyone on here needs to rethink there stocking lol

Just because he's previously been in a small tank does not change the fact that a 48, 24, 18 is too small, they are a very active, messy fish and once he matures he will become aggressive in a small tank, The minimum tank size for one is quoted at 180g.

No need to keep this going. Thats your opinion. I can find 25 sites that state a 75 is adequate for a full grown humu. Every site has a different opinion. I can tell you he pretty much has this tank to himself and is happy roaming around. The dottyback doesnt even make a dent in the free swimming space. And the clown is going to the lfs today.

I agree. Of course free advice is worth what you paid for it.

Fishbase has max length at nearly a foot. A 75 is pretty tight quarters, imo. Many triggers can do fine in a smaller than ideal tank. At a certain point in their growth, territory the trigger claims will become drastically bigger. There are many anecdotes of triggers suddenly snapping due to this.

In your case, since the trigger will be staying, I wouldn't keep it in the 80gal with anything else you care about. Any tank mates would need to be tough. Maybe the large clown would be a good option. A harlequin basslet might be something to look at too.

Well I came home with a niger trigger. Niger and humu will go in a 90 gallon 48x18x24 on Thursday along with a yellow tang and the neon dottyback. Found a friend to buy the 45 and 80 for what I paid for it practically. 90 is on order to be here wednesday setup by thursday... biggest tank I could afford and fit in the space

Why did you even ask for advice?

My posts were not suppose to come across condescending, but opinion and advice for the welfare of your fish. You have two large aggressive fish and a yellow tang which also grow to a good size, all three fish require lots of swimming room, territorial and will create a big bioload.

Not only are you risking loosing fish due to aggression but you also risk loosing fish from stress.

I realize that in maybe 3+ years the niger will need a new home. But imo a yellow tang and humu can live happily in a 90. It will have a 55 gallon sump to help with bioload. The niger is 2 inches, humu 4 inches. Tang I do not have yet but it will be no more than 2 to 3 inches. I was under the impression if you get a tang, the yellow tang was the one to go with for smaller tanks? The swimming space is going to be open not cluttered with rock to the top of the tank. Midway with lots of swimthroughs is what I am shooting for.

I am very unconventional compared to others here on keeping triggers. Although your choice of tankmates with a niger an yellow tang would be fine, the size difference could cause a major problem. A 4" humu could literally rip a 2" niger to shreds almost as soon as he hits the water. Triggers will always tend to challenge each other, the only way it works(especially in a smaller tank) is that they all need to be able to hold their own against each other. A 2" niger would be fine in a 90 for a couple of years, but no way would I add one with a humu twice his size.

As soon as I added the niger the humu went after him very bad. But now they are swimming together just fine. Niger is still getting used to his surroundings. And yes when the niger gets big enougj he will go.
