I think I got a maculosus chrysurus hybrid. Sold to me as a mac at about 3", now about 5" and has retained the juvenille stripes with none of the light blue that you would find on a mac his size. I would take a pic but he is super shy. Anybody know where I can find a pic to confirm. What's the going rate on this fish?:spin1:

Hybrids like that are very rare! So its not like many people have pics of them lying around to compare. I'm sure there are some pics, but...

I'm almost 99.9% sure its a mac or chrysurus.

If I had one of those "this thread is worthless without pics" pics, I'd post it!

The P.maculosus x chysurus hybrid is more rare than the more common hybrid out of east africa the P.macolosus x semicirculatus.

Those hybrids are different from one another, I have a terrible pic on my mobile phone of a hybrid like that at around 12" that went for very high sum.
It was perfect! a full Chrysurus face incld the "ear" the body shape was Mac that is "taller" than the chysurus, and it had a huge yellow spot of the Mac with chysurus stripes in it.
I have seen a few P.maculosus x chrysurus hybrids but none was so perfect or even near.

i have read on this forum that mac angels from Kenya take longer to get there adult color

True.
If you look at Macs that are coming in high numbers from Yemen , you can see them in full adult coloration, lost all of their juvenile stripes in relatively small size.
The ones in east africa change when they're larger, and tens to keep the stripes longer, you can sometimes see a 7" specimen with adult colors, but still some juvenile stripes.

They are also different in shape, the east africa ones are more "tall" or rounded.
They're also more expensive.

This may explain what I am seeing, thanks for the useful info.

Can someone start a thread letting me know when a picture is posted of the fish in question. I check this thread and only become disappointed. T

I had my doubts but the dorsal on your fish is far more yellow than any Mac I have ever seen. Wonderful fish regardless.

at one stage the kenya colletor i use had a semi mac hybrid but $4500 is to mutch for a off color mac angel

maybe john can swing by soon and do a confirmation, although i have doubts too that this fish is a hybrid looks like a regular mac juvi or even asfur from what i have seen online

If they want big bucks for their hybrids, they must sell it with a picture.
I know of Kenya exporters who got payed more than this.
I know of exporter who wanted more than this and ended up getting few hundreds.
All depends on the fish itself.
