Hydor Koralia - controlable and wavemaker.

I just got a chance to check this out up close and personal. Hydor now has Controlable Koralias. The Koralia line just got a major reworking. The motors are now DC which means less power consumption, and less heat transferred into your tank. The Controller/Wavemaker has a AC/DC transformer built into it. It is basically silent. They currently have the Koralia Nano, 1, 2, 3, and 4 available along with the dual controller. The quad controller will be released soon. Here is a picture of the Koralia's...

Also...they have a line of recirculating protein skimmers also. I did get to see it in person, and the quality is very nice. However, I did not get to see it in action. I was disappointed, but I guess I will see it in action soon. I ordered one, and will be playing with it soon. I will post a picture shortly.

And lastly, I got to see Perfecto's new line of reef ready tanks. These all come standard with built-in overflow boxes, overflow kits, and they are available in the following sizes...150, 200, and 300 gallons. The dimensions are the fun part...they are all 36" front to back, and 27" tall. The lengths are 36", 48", or 72". I will post pics of these soon too.

Have they talked about pricing on the new Hydors? The controllable Tunzes are extremely nice, and just as extremely pricey.

Koralia 4 - 64.99 - 79.99
Controller - 299.99 - 349.99

Keep in mind that the Hydor units place the transformer in the controller. Tunze has them in-line on the pumps power cord. The Hydor units can not be run without the controller , the Tunze's can. Tunze can also be run on other controllers as well. So it's not exactly apples and apples. It looks like it's pasta and bratwurst.

Those tanks do look nice but a bit pricey and a tab too tall for me (gotta be able to clean it).

Why do you say they are a bit pricey? What price have you seen on them?

I use a pair of standard K4's on a inexpensive Aquarium Systems Natural Wave Wavemaker and they work great. Granted there is a little stutter on startup ocassionaly, but its far cheaper than the Tunze solution. Maybe I missed something but unless they changed the way they plug in, they can be used with any 120v outlet.

Take a look at the connector for the new models above. These are DC...not AC. Yes, the old models (which they will continue to make) can be used on some wave makers, but you will get the hard start which may cause wear and tear on the impellar, shaft, or even the motor...along with the noise. The new ones in conjunction with the controller, will have a soft start, and many programmable ramping options for the flow created.

Those are speed controllable. They use a DC motor with a transformer. The Koralias that are out now are different and use an AC motor. Since Hydor put the transformer in the controller the new ones can't be plugged into an AC source ( wall outlet) and as the picture shows do use a different plug which I can only assume is meant to keep people from doing just that. Putting aside any differences in cost and quality the biggest difference between the new controllable Koralias and the controllable Streams are that if the streams control unit fails they can be plugged into the wall and run as normal units, the Hydor ones can not. This is only an issue if the controller does fail.

Sorry Rendos, I was thinking the controller was a bit pricy. Now if I could just get my fingers to type what I think it would be great.

My only problem with the tank is the height. I need to keep the top of the tank below 50" so I can clean it. This doesn't leave a lot of room for the cabinate. My iBOT does bring me up pretty high in balance mode but to clean a tank I am going to have to be in 4 wheel for stability. I can raise it in that mode to where my armpit is right at 50".

I do think with 36" depth you could do a lot with aquasqaping and would really be cool. I would love to see one if you or Dave get any in.
