Hydor Wavemaker

Has anyone used the Hydor wavemaker that attaches to a powerhead? I have a 90 gallon with 2 maxi 900 and 1 maxi 600. I am thinking about attaching 2 of these to the maxi 900s that are on the outsides of the tank. Has anyone had any luck with them. do they decrease the flow a lot? Would they be worth my while and $20?

Don't get'm and save your money. They work good for about three to six months and then they get stuck constantly..."they suck!" in short.

i agree with benray4fun......i had 2 on my mj1200 and it really cuts down on the flow.

Mines have worked fine for me, you just have to clean them from time to time just like you do everything else in your aquarium, for its price, its great! they produce a constent smooth flow/underwater wave(sorta like the deep sea), and not some crazy burst of water that will knock your coral over or have sand blowing everywhere!

I had the same trouble as "benray4fun" had. I was able to clean them in vinegar each time and they were as good as new, but after a while they just dont work the same.
When they did work, they did a good job. They don't make it in the long run. I now have 4 of them in the junk box.

My power heads are in the corners set at a 45 degree angle and they make there own current against each other, seem to be working ok so far. At lease I have a lot more flow than before. LOL

If you are talking about the Hydor FLO rotating attachments for your powerheads I have two on my MJ900's and am happy with them. Like an above post said you do have to clean them every once in a while like you do your powerheads but other then that I think they work great.

Agree. My experience with them is they're a good idea and fine for as long as they work. I bought 2 and used them with MJ900's. After awhile, they just started skipping or wouldn't rotate at all ...even after cleaning.

These are inexpensive but really very reliable. As said above, they require some cleaning from time to time but if you do that, they are, IMO, definitely worth the money because they will improve the quality of the water flow that comes from a maxijet or similar powerhead that makes a thin "tube" of water movement which isn't ideal.

I've had two of them working on my reef, one of them for about a year and a half with no problems.

They take a little tweaking over time to keep from sticking. A little piece of plastic between the white clip and the deflector keeps just the right amount of tension on it to keep it spinning as good as new. It does decrease the overall flow from the powerhead, but the random water movement is very nice.

Also, they don't just skip and stop rotating, they also pop off every once in a while and I'm trying to reduce maintenance not create some.

I agree with benray4fun, waste of money due to big time decrease in flow. They would be good to use only if you want to put them in a very small tank like a 10g on a MJ 1200 powerhead.

I have one right next to a MJ1200 mod that pushes between 1800 and 2000 gph. Even with that amount of "competition" you can see that the coral that's even 15-inches away is getting the benefit of the Hydor's flow on a MJ1200. Even beyond that distance, the Hydor contributes to a randomness and waviness in the reef that is desireable. So, while there may indeed be some minimal loss from the Hydor, IMO, the kind of random, intermittant flow that it creates throught the tank (120-gallons) still makes them worth if for sure.
