Hydro Wizard Pump for a 8' / 420g+ tank?

Hi guys,

I'm working on a new build... thinking 96"x36"x28" room divider setup right now and debating options for flow (closed loop / vortech / tunes etc).

Reading a little about a pump called the Hydro Wizard medium - rated at 15,000 GPH. I'm thinking it could be a great solution if I could drop one of these in at the head of the tank where it would push down the 8' length and call it a day.

Does anyone have any experience with this pump? I cant even find a dealer in the US right now. Criteria for this pump must include nearly dead silent db level (the Vortechs have been too loud for me/the wife in the past but this was with the mp40s).

I found a link comparing to the MP60 over on ************ but not a whole lot more info out there...

Any recommendation or thoughts on my flow / insight into this pump would be greatly appreciated.

The problem with one really large pump, is that you'll get one area where it pushes a lot of flow, might have a tough time growing stuff there. Plus you might have parts of your tank that are devoid of much flow just due to the geometry of the situation.

I would go with a more smaller pumps on larger tanks.

I have only read the article over at http://r.e.e.f.builders.com/2012/01/31/hydro-wizard-small/. You would have to put it in a corner and aim the output to deflect off the side of the glass to prevent too hard a flow hitting any of your corals. I would think you'd want one at either end, one to flow away from the overflow plus one kitty-corner at the other end in the opposite direction. This would create a gyre flow. Then you might want another pair on opposite sides to allow you to reverse the gyre every six hours or so.

Just saw these at Macna. I was very impressed. Even with the medium sized unit running 15000 gph full blast and my ear pressed against the glass, dead silent!. The cord in the water is also very thin especially on the 5000 gph unit (about the width of an iphone charger cable). The build quality is what can be expected from high end, high priced German engineering. Their control software really nice as well although I believe the rep said the pumps are not compatible with other controllers (but I could be wrong there). I was hoping they worked something out with profilux but they said they use a digital control signal while Profilux uses analog and it could be done but didnt make any sense for them to do it. I am seriously considering going with two of the 5000 gph unit on my 200 set up for a gyre effect but I need to learn more about laminar flow. They move ALLOT of water that is for sure but my concern is the same as sfsuphysics above. Can anyone else chime in regarding their experience with laminar flow in an SPS dominated reef?

They do have different exit ports available that are screwed on at the business end of the pump to control the spread of the flow. I thought that was a great idea. All the metal pieces were made from titanium and the control box IMO was a piece of art.
