I sympathize having just gone through the same thing for a walk in customer with a repair a couple weeks ago, I actually broke it before I managed to successfully remove it. They changed the oring due to complaints about bubbles seeping out of this part, they are now very tight. I can say DO NOT resort to tools, it will break, I broke the one here by using pliers. What finally worked was running it under hot water and using a syringe to dribble a small amount of glycerin into the space where the housings meet and then twisting hard. Cooking oil could also be used but clean everything well afterwards. If a few bubbles don't bother you, I would downsize the oring to a smaller diameter with one from a hardware store.
