Hypo Salinity

I was wondering what are the effects of having low salt in a reef tank I realized that my refractometer was calibrated and my salt was 1.017. that explains why my corals looked bleached cause are my other parameters are in range. Just wondering what are some other effects hypo can have on the tank?

on a reef tank, hypo kills inverts, servery stresses corals, and keep fish disease free from what i hear. never tried it nor want to :lol: so i recalibrate every 2 weeks or so (though i haven't touched the thing for awhile :rolleye1: ) Wiz

It probably won't hurt your fish---we bring down the salinity on them for treating ich to 1.007.
Scavengers like snails----should not be bothered either--I tested the bag out from an LFS store and found they keep their salinity at 1.008.

It can depend on how long and how fast the level went to 1.017.

Most importantly take the salinity up very carefully or that will cause problems (.001 a day)

Do you corals look bleached as in white or brown and dying off.

I think that this has been like this for a while. Yeah that is what triggered me to figure out what the hell was going on all my levels were good no nitrates or phosphates according to the test kits. and

I have not much algae growth and my corals started to bleach and my monti flesh started to peel a little.

I put 2 and 2 together when I realized that i had a monti downstairs doing the same thing as the tank upstairs. I have to say the corals that are doing good are some strong hardy corals. They were still growing I cant wait to see what is going to happen at correct salinity lol


What I was doing and yes I am admitting to this mistake is using the pinpoint salinity solution and adjusting it to 1.035 instead of 1.026 which is .35. I thought that the .35 was the same as 1.035 opppps

by the way there is about 20 sps medium to large size frags in the tank

using the pin point I only worry about adjusting it to 35
