hyposalinity question

what if i leave some rock and sand in the tank?
I have a large bioload in the tank and I would like to keep some type of biological filtration. With salinity at .09, would the sand and rock still have this filtration ability?

Hyposalinity will kill much of the life on/in your sand and rock, which could produce deadly amounts of ammonia.
